How Workday actually parses your resume in 2026

Workday runs hiring at 50%+ of the Fortune 500. Here is exactly how its parser turns your PDF into a candidate profile — and how to write for it.

TL;DR Workday extracts your resume into a structured profile with 30+ fields. If parsing fails, the recruiter sees a blank record. Single-column PDF with standard section names is the only safe format.

What Workday does on upload On upload, Workday runs OCR-adjacent text extraction, splits your document into Contact, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications, then maps each field into its internal taxonomy. Job titles get normalized ('Sr. SWE II' becomes 'Senior Software Engineer II'). Skills get tagged and compared against the requisition's required skills list.

The five parsing traps Two-column layouts get read as one long paragraph. Text inside logos or icons is skipped. Custom section headers ('My Journey', 'What I Do') don't map to Workday fields. Missing month-level dates ('2023-now') break the tenure calculation. And DOCX uploads parse measurably worse than PDF — Workday's Word extractor is a decade older than its PDF one.

Format for Workday specifically Single column. Standard headers: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Dates as 'Jan 2023 - Present'. Job titles that match a common taxonomy (Senior Software Engineer, not 'Code Ninja'). Skills grouped in a dedicated section — Workday extracts these as tags, and the tags feed the requisition matcher.

The auto-fill test Upload your resume to any Workday job. Watch the application form auto-populate. Every empty field is a parsing miss. Fix the resume until every field fills correctly — that's your ATS-ready baseline.

How to check your score before applying Kairos Resume Analysis runs the same style of extraction Workday uses and shows you every miss before you submit. Free forever, and the ATS Check (vs JD) tab tells you exactly which requisition keywords you're missing.
